Paul Lange’s photographs have been featured in distinguished publications worldwide including Vogue, British Vogue, Bazaar, Glamour, Mademoiselle, GQ, Elle and the New York Times, amongst others. As a prominent NYC based fashion photographer for 25 years, he traveled the globe on editorial assignments, shooting both in the studio and on location. He created hundreds of covers, inside stories and celebrity portraits over the course of his fashion career, with subjects ranging from Hillary Rodham Clinton and Ralph Lauren to Halle Berry and numerous others. Inspired by a playful irreverence for the expected, he is known for his sensuous lighting and for the energy and life he captures in his subjects– human, flora and fauna.
Six years ago, he relocated his studio to New York’s Hudson Valley, where he is currently at work on a number of large-scale photography projects, including a pro bono studio portrait series of foster children awaiting adoption in New York State that began in 2009, and an unusual nature project in the Hudson Valley at the farm and garden estate of renowned NYC florist, Zezé.
Initially an exploration of the changing light and seasons in Zezé’s gardens, the project, now in its 6th year, is as much about changes in the photographer as in the place. Compelling as the garden is, even more intriguing is the artistic response which grows with familiarity– to reveal nature in this one paradise almost magically, as it might be when no one is there– trees dance and spin, flowers winsomely seduce, antique statuary walk through the woods, and birds stand on a makeshift set under the open sky.
A native New Yorker, Paul lives in Chatham, New York with his wife and creative partner, Jennifer. He has been exhibiting his work continuously in galleries throughout the Northeast since 2007, and his photographs are in private collections nationwide. His work was recently included in the Beauty Culture exhibit at the Annenberg Space for Photography in LA.
